Catholic AnswerA mystic is someone who has attained to the prayer known as contemplation, the highest form of prayer for someone still alive on earth. No human effort or exertion can succeed in producing contemplation. Contemplation is an immediate, personal experience of God that is truly extraordinary not only in intensity and degree, but in kind. This is the prayer that Our Blessed Lord is talking about when He tells us that we must pray always as it is a continual awareness of God's presence that it is given by God. It is always the result of a special, totally unmerited grace of God. It differs essentially from non-Christian mysticism of the Oriental world, it is a totally different thing and the confusion comes about because we both use the same word to mean totally different things. There is no confusion between "I" and "thou" (God), but a profound humility in which the individual soul has a profound humility in love, and God's will, even at great personal sacrifice, becomes the overwhelming object of the individual's love. For a more complete understanding of mystics, you could read nearly anything by two of the Church's greatest mystics: St. Teresa of Avila or St. John of the Cross. A good beginning towards the Prayer of Union would be Prayer Primer by Father Dubay, who was an expert on The Bible and on these two great saints.
