This works well at mid-summer and mid-winter, but for other times of the year, you can get better accuracy by recording sunrise/sunset times over a few days and extrapolating for the next day. Another way to think about this: Local noon is the moment when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky on any given day. Wherever you are, it is when an object casts the shortest possible shadow.

The scientific term solar noon describes the moment when the sun crosses the meridian in apparent solar time, the time during a day with the highest sun elevation, which depends on longitude, latitude and date.
