Although it is commonly thought that 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit is the average oral temperature for an adult, normal temperature can range from 97.1 degrees to about 99.5 degrees.
It is a good idea to determine your own normal body temperature by taking your temperature when you feel well. This can also be done during your regular doctor's visit, but it is best to do it yourself for a few reasons: Different thermometers can have slightly different results, and body temperature can change with weather, time of day, and physical activity. To understand your body temperature, take your healthy temperature multiple times in a variety of conditions, using the same thermometer.
Any temperature difference of more than a degree from your normal could be a fever.
Normal body temperature on an oral thermometer is about 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) or 37 degrees Celsius(°C). Some people can always read one degree lower or one degree higher and still be "normal" for that person.
We wound up with that temperature because of the way Mr. Fahrenheit set up his scale. The story goes that he started his scale at the lowest air temperature measured in his hometown of Danzig in the winter of 1708-1709. He then calibrated the rest of it so that water froze/melted at 32° (2 to the 5th power) and body temperature was 64 degrees higher (64 is 2 to the 6th power) so that the interval was easily divided in half, and then in half again and in half again etc.... to form his intervals. It seems his average body temperature was just a little off because that would make normal body temperature 96 degrees rather than what we commonly use, i.e. 98.6 °F. Maybe folks were just always a bit hypothermic there in Danzig?
