Originally they were called the "Philadelphia Cheese Steaks" by their first owner Herman Talmadge 3rd, but shortened to merely The Phillies in 1928.
The previous paragraph is an interesting prevarication for two reasons:
1) The National League team playing in Philadelphia has been called the "Phillies" -- both in their corporation papers and in all local newspapers -- since 1890.
2) Cheese-steaks were not invented until 1930.
It has never been definitely established who first gave this team the nickname of "Phillies." Like most teams, their name was original their city; ie, the Philadelphias, the New Yorks, the Bostons, etc. Newspapers in the 1880s show they were sometimes also called the Quakers and the Phillies. The latter name became official in 1890.
