A systemic disease caused by the multiplication of microorganisms in the blood. Also called blood poisoning, septic fever.
Septicaemia is also known as blood poisoning, and is a potentially life threatening condition. It is caused by a rapid increase of bacteria in the blood stream. Septicaemia usually occurs as a secondary infection, beginning as a bacterial infection in a specific part of the body; infections such as meningitis, and bacterial pneumonia can be responsible. In a very short time, the person infected will look very sick. Symptoms can include fever, chills, sweating, and a rise in heart and respiratory rates. As it worsens, the skin of the infected individual can become cold and clammy. Blood pressure can drop dramatically, and the person can fall into unconsciousness. The person's skin becomes very pale, and can develope spots known as Petechiae. Septicaemia is diagnosed through a blood culture. Treatment needs to be done quickly, and may include intravenous antibiotics and drugs. Broad spectrum antibiotics are usually used to start with, possibly followed by specific antibiotics once the offending bacteria is known.
