The frizzen is an "L" shaped piece of steel hinged at the rear used in flintlock firearms. It is positioned over the flash pan so to enclose a small priming charge of black powder next to the flash hole that is drilled through the barrel into where the main charge is loaded.

In a copier or printer manufactured by the Xerox Corporation, the charge is placed on the photoreceptor by passing it under a charged wire. No flash is used for that purpose. This phrase stems from the 'flintlock' small arms (hand-held weapons) of the 17th to 19th centuries. The ignition mechanism of these weapons involved a small quantity of gunpowder in a small dish (the 'pan') being ignited by sparks struck from a metal plate by a flint. This gunpowder would then send a flame through a small hole into the main charge that had been loaded into the barrel. Occasionally the main charge would not ignite following the burning of the gunpowder in the pan. Hence the phrase 'a flash in the pan' refers to short-lived activity that fails to lead to more substantial or sustained action.
In a flint-lock firearm, the priming pan is where the spark from the flint ignites a small amount of gunpowder, which then ignites the main charge. If the firearm misfires, after having its primer ignited, you have a "flash in the pan."
