Toy and Teacup Poodles make very good pets if you have an apartment. They are one of the most inteligent dogs and thus easy to train. Because of their size, they generaly get all the excersize they need simply from walking around the appartment. Also, because they have hair and not fur they do not shed and are hypo-allergenic dogs. Some of these breeds include Coon Hounds (Black and Tans, Blueticks, Plott and Walker). They also include Greyhounds. Greyhounds are excluded because of their energy level alone. The last Hound that is not suited for apartment life is the Beagle. Beagles can be very loud and very active. # Herding Breeds - Most herding breeds are very high energy, and will be very bored in an apartment style life. Any of these breeds could develop destructive behavior living in an apartment. # Siberian Huskies - This breed is commonly known as a working dog, a sledding dog. They are not often thought of that way, so many find themselves homeless. While they are very cute, they can become destructive in apartment life. # Terriers - While some Terrier breeds may do okay in apartment life, they are for the most part very energetic and will require a lot of energy. They do best in a home with a yard or dog exercise pen that they are free to run in. All dogs shed. Many of the smaller dogs that shed less than others are terriers. Terriers are very smart and can be trained, but some people believe they are not easy to train. It all depends on the amount of time you are willing to give to the training process and how consistent you can be in training them. (I personally believe they are easier to train than many other types of dogs, but they must know you are the "Alpha", or they will take charge and try to train YOU if you are not good at projecting your leadership to them.) But, leaving the terriers out, consider the miniature or toy poodles. They are very smart, easily trained, and are one of the breeds with the least amount of shedding (and low dander for those who have allergy problems, too).
