A veteran is a retired soldier.
Someone who has retired from an active duty position with the army national guard can transition to a role with the air force. The soldier would have to meet the requirements for reenlisting.

One is Marine as in water the other is air as in the sky. So basically in one you work in water and the other in the air.
There are no soldiers in the Air Force - soldier is a term exclusive to the Army. Airman is the term for Air Force personnel. As for what happens.. they become a married couple, the same as if anyone else gets married. Depending on a number of circumstances, it may or may not lead to measures being taken to ensure that they are stationed together - however, this cannot be guaranteed.
I am not sure you stated your question right but Army(Soldier), Air Force(Airmen), Navy(Sailor), and Marines are Marines. They are all in the United States Military.
You said soldier. From the Japanese flag angle it was entirely a Naval and Naval air force battle. Ground troops were not deployed or landed.

Contracts vary from soldier to soldier, however for a regular force soldier, contracts can typically be from 3 to 8 years of service. Reserve Force personnel are on voluntary service and can leave whenever they wish.
In the Army or Air Force it's called Leave In the Navy and Marine Corps it's called Liberty.
