butte
Butte
escarpment, or plateau:))
The definition of a butte or buttes in English is an isolated hill(s) or mountain(s) with steep sides usually having a smaller summit that a mesa. Most buttes have steep sides and a flat top.
A butte is a hill with steep sides and a small flat top, but in some regions of the U.S. the meaning has been broadened and is used for any hill. An example would be the Mitten Buttes of Monument valley in Arizona. They're in the background of a lot of old western films, so are easily recognizable as the stereotypical buttes.
