The basic theme is the struggle of the Creole population of Belize to hold on to their ethnic heritage and assert their civil rights while faced with opposition from the Hispanic community. (IMO, reading great literature should be seen as a privilege and an honor not a tedious obligation).

The summary is basically the Lamb family excluding Bill went to the cay for a vacation taking along with them Toycie and Toycie is waiting for Emilio. While waiting Beka and Toycie pretend to be politicians which shows the impact of politics in Belize. When Emilio comes Toycie runs off with him and Beka tells her not to.
