Syringes are uncommon in teaching labs, but are widely used in some research labs. The primary use of syringes is delivering liquid reagents to the reaction mixture under inert atmosphere. The reaction vessel is closed with a septum and pressurized, perhaps with nitrogen. Since the reagents cannot simply be poured, syringes are used to deliver the reagents to the vessel, without compromising the seal on the septum. It is also more convenient to measure small volumes with a syringe than with a graduated cylinder, and thus syringes may also be used for measuring volumes of liquid reagents.

A syringe is like a needle desgined to work both ways. It is often used to apply liquid medicine. If you put the tip in a liquid and pull back on the part inside the tube, it draws water into it, and then pushing it back out makes the liquid squirt out.

A Syringe works by drawing out all the air in side of it using the stopper, creating an absence of mass. then the surrounding mass rushes to fill that space.

What is a gas syringe and how is it used?

A gas syringe is basically a device that fills up with a gas that is produced and gives a volume for that gas. Gas from a reaction is forced into the syringe due to pressure and the syringe plunger is forced out (just like how you suck up a liquid with a normal syringe). It can be used to detect the volume of gas produced in a chemical reaction for instance.See the Web Links to the left for more information.
