You can try to bring up something that was in the news. Don't talk about how bad the abuser was, it will only scare them more and make them feel as if they have to put more effort into covering it. Talk about how bad it is for the abused person only. Make sure that you mention ways out of a relationship like that (such as local shelters or mental health facilities that offer abuse counseling), without sounding judgemental. Let them see how bad it hurts you to think of someone living like that silently for so long. Just don't push or make them defensive. Hope this helps. If they won't tell you voluntarily after time, you may have to be direct, but just be gentle about it AND don't talk bad about the abuser! That is very important because they will feel a need to defend them and that will only make it worse!
