A tramp steamer is a ship that carries freight, traveling from port to port caring small mixed loads to various destinations. They're schedule is pretty unstructured and if they happened to pick up a load that was going to a certain destination that paid better then the loads they were already scheduled to deliver, they would blow them off to get the money maker done first.

A tramp steamer of the Liberty or Victory type appears on the Merchant Marine commemorative issued shortly after the war. ( WW2) it is a flush deck, not the more celebrated Three-Island Type with forecastle, mid-section ( wheel room and engine compartment) and after deck.
