What is a wash in 40k?

I am firstly assuming that you are talking about paint. If this is the case then a wash is a watery, high pigment paint designed to flow into recesses and dry once applied over a base coat of paint. This effect helps define the detailing in the miniature and also gives the impression of depth. Multiple layers of wash can be used to give a glazed or semitransparent look.

Washes come in a large range of colors suitable for specific applications (such as armor wash, flesh wash etc) but realistically most high quality acrylics can be diluted to create a wash. In terms of GW paints I recommend a 1:30 ratio.
