A written exam is exactly what it sounds like its a "Written" exam. meaning a text where you have to answer questions using a pencil or pen like on a scan tran in high school. any exam like a math quiz or science test when you were in school are all "written exams". to give you an idea, some tests are "verbal" or verbal exams where the test is given verbally, like no paper or pen needed your teacher asks you a quesiton and you answer this is common in second language classes like when you take spanish in school.
