The difference lies in the range of notes (low to high) that a voice can sing.
The standard of classical harmony is based on the notion of having at least four notes in each chord. This allows most chords to to be complete (having all their notes), or at least sufficiently complete, without letting the musical texture become too thick.
In choral writing, four voice-parts are needed to provide the necessary notes. The highest voice is called Soprano, the lowest is called Bass. The middle voices are Alto (medium-high) and Tenor (medium low).
In a standard four-voice choir, Soprano parts are sung by women or children, Bass parts by men. The middle parts are sung by either men or women, with women preferring Alto and men preferring Tenor. This is simply because as a general rule the vocal chords of men are thicker than those of women, and thicker vocal chords favour lower notes. Most female tenors have trouble with the expected lower range of the tenor part, and similarly most male altos have trouble with the expected top end of the alto range. As female altos and male tenors are the majority, that is what composers and arrangers generally assume. C'est la vie.
Professional soloists refer to themselves as "soprano" (high female voice), "tenor" (high male), "bass" (low male). Female altos are usually called "contraltos" and male altos are frequently called "countertenors". A child soloist is usually called a "treble", from the older English name for "soprano".
Voices that don't fit into these categories are called "mezzo soprano" (between soprano and alto) and "baritone" (between tenor and bass).
Both are women's ranges, but the Alto is lower than the Mezzo-Soprano. The highest women's range is Soprano "Alto" is used more often when discussing parts in choral siging, such as SATB or SSA. In fact, boys can sing alto and men called "countertenors" who sing in falsetto can sing alto parts. Some mezzo-sopranos will sing alto and some mezzo-sopranos will sing second soprano. The real term for the woman's voice part that is lower than mezzo-soprano would be "contralto". True contraltos are much rarer than mezzo-sopranos. A contralto would do most of their singing in the lower part of the range and the sound would be rich. They would need to be able to sing passages that spend a lot of time below middle C and just above middle C. Mezzo-sopranos can have a similar range to sopranos, but would spend more of their time singing in the lower part of their range than a soprano would, and a soprano would spend more of their time singing in the higher part of their range than a mezzo would. Mezzo-sopranos can have light voices or heavy voices.
Alto saxes are smaller and dont have as bendy of a neck as tenors do. Tenors are lower because they are larger. Also tenor and alto saxes are written in different keys, so you have to transpose between. Hope this was helpful!
an Alto is what women sing whereas the tenor is like the soprano to the base so to speak. Tenors sing higher than the base just like sopranos sing higher than the altos. tenor is a couple of steps lower than alto and is the soprano version for the guys.
There's a BIG difference between alto and tenor sax I know because i played both. One thing is that tenor bigger and is really low and alto is smaller and is high, also your b flat concert scale is different, and finaly you learn the note at differrent times tenor you learn c d e f g and alto its g a b c d. so its different
An alto is a Eb instrument and is the middle and most common type of Saxophone and has a middle pitched sound, a Tenor Saxophone has a much richer deeper sound and has a slightly lower pitched sound and is much less common, a soprano is a much higher instrument and is less common as well and has the highest sound of them all.
Soprano is the highest pitch and alto is the next one down. It is the same with all instruments and pitches.
Soprano is the highest type of female voice. Tenor is the highest type of male voice.
Alto, sometime called contralto, is the lowest woman's voice. Soprano is the highest. "Mezzo" is Italian for "middle," so mezzo-soprano is the middle woman's voice.
Base, tenor, alto, soprano
Alicia Keys is an alto. An example of a soprano would be Ariana Grande. An example of a mezzo soprano would be Beyonce.

If your alto cousin sings her part a fifth lower, at appropriate intervals, you will be singing harmony.
She's either an alto or a second soprano!
The lowest female voice in a choir is called a contralto or, more commonly, an alto. This voice is also referred to as a "second alto."
The role of the soprano is singing melody and is the highest singing voice. The soprano voice usually an octave above the other parts but not an absolute rule for sometimes the soprano takes the lower notes. Usually this would occur in a choir or a four part song. It goes like this: Soprano, Alto (women) Tenor, Base (usually men) but if a women has a very low range alto voice she can sing a man tenor part.
