Correct me if I am wrong but I believe alpha rays do not exist. There are alpha particles, and gamma rays, but I do not think alpha rays exist. Alpha particles are most commonly used in smoke detectors, but have been used in the past of kill isolated areas of cancer cells.

∙ 13y agoAlpha radiation is used in a few practical applications, occassionally even to make use of it's harmful effects. Alpha radiation is often used as a power source for space probes and artificial pacemakers, a safe one at that as alpha radiation is easier to shield against than other radiation types. It can also be used to treat cancerous tumours in the body in a process called 'unsealed source radiatherapy', it can be risky to use sometimes, but it has been shown to be quite effective in certain cases.
