An Optical Character Reader is a machine used--like at a Post Office, for example--to read particular data. I learned a lot about the Post Office's OCR machine and it reads the Zip Code and is capable of spraying the Bar Code onto the mail. Hope this helps! The printed character are examined by passing them under a strong light & a lens system, which differentiates light (no ink) from linked area, and a logical system, which attempts to determine which of the possible characters is being examined.
