Accipiter is a name in taxonomy used in the description of a family of Birds of Prey. The hierarchy is Kingdom: animalia, phylum: chordata, Class; Aves, Order: Accipitriformes, and family: Accipitridae These raptors are characterized by slender body shapes, long tails, and rounded wings that enable them to maneuver quickly and with agility in and out through trees in pursuit of birds to prey upon. They have long legs and long talons which enable them to reach out with their legs while in flight to grasp and kill the birds they have ambushed from behind cover.

Goshawks and Sparrowhawks make up the majority of the birds in this family. Two of the more commonly known hawks that are Accipiters are the Sharp-shinned Hawk and the Cooper's Hawk.
