What is an alphanumeric grid?

An alphanumeric grid is one in which one axis' gradations are alphabetical, and the other, numeric. For example, a four-space alphanumeric grid would be described, from upper left, to right, then lower left, to right, as; A-1, A-2, B-1, B-2 A nine-space; A-1, A-2, A-3, B-1, B-2, B-3, C-1, C-2, C-3 C?...it's easy ;-)
