a anaesthetic is a gas a bit chloroform which you put over a persons mouth to knock them out. once they are knocked out, it will be easier to operate on him or her because you don't want a screaming and kicking person and pinning them down to the operating table, you want to able to make the better by cutting them open. I was cut open once for a appendix and I was knocked out with a gas called anaesthetic didn't feel a thing.
