Wesley McDaniel Mrs. Powell 4-1-09 The Sun Also Rises A Central theme of The Sun Also Rises, describes that the characters live a moral free and meaningless life. Characters portray this image by the way they value and rely on the use alcohol. Also, the main characters of The Sun Also Rises are very lacking of a religious standard. Lastly, the mentality that the characters have towards running away from their problems lists them as immoral and meaningless. Ernest Hemingway uses dialogue to express how most of the characters in The Sun Also Rises are living a very meaningless lifestyle. Alcohol is a main topic of discussion throughout the entire novel by Hemingway. "The fiesta was really started. It kept up day and ... night for seven days. The dancing kept up, the drinking kept up, the noise went on. The things that happened could` only have happened during a fiesta. Everything became quite unreal finally and it seemed as though nothing could have any consequences. It seemed out of place to think of consequences during the fiesta. All during the fiesta you had the feeling, even when it was quiet, that you had to shout any remark to make it heard." (158) This Dialogue by Jake, the main character, describes the type of situations that they put themselves in which will lead to "unreal events" or chaos which allows the characters to escape there real state of life. During this part of the book all the characters are looking for a surreal experience that will let them find a sense of accomplishment or being. By going Spain for the fiesta and Bull Fights they were able to find this surreal atmosphere that allowed them to escape. Almost all of the conversations held by Jake and his friends the use of alcohol is made the main topic. Next, the dialogue expressed between the characters lead you to believe that there is almost no religious standard that causes them to live a moral and ethical life. "I was a little ashamed, and regretted that I was such a rotten Catholic, but realized there was nothing I could do about it, at least for a while, and maybe never, but that anyway it was a grand religion, and I only wished I felt religious and maybe I would the next time." After analyzing this quote from Jake I realized that honestly he didn't really care whether he had religion controlling his life or not. "Don't Know why I get so nervy in church," Brett Said. "Never Does me any good." "I'm damned bad for a religious atmosphere
