Axolotls are amphibians which keep their larval form throughout their lives. The Mexican axolotl (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl) salamander has the rare trait of retaining its larval features throughout its adult life. This condition, called neoteny, means it keeps its tadpole-like dorsal fin, which runs almost the length of its body, and its feathery external gills, which protrude from the back of its wide head.
An axolotl is a type of amphibian native to Mexico. It is very unusual because it never undergoes metamorphosis, but actually reaches sexual maturity in its larval form. It requires a coldwater species aquarium, as fish will nibble its gills and it will eat small fish. However, you can keep several axolotls in a large enough tank. The minimum tank for one axolotl is three feet (but you can keep several in this tank).
