Electro magnets are only magnetic when an electric current is flowing, unlike a standard magnet which is always magnetic. When the electric current is switched off, the magnetism decays away (collapses). They normally take the form of a fixed core made of soft iron surrounded by a coil of copper wire which acts as the conductor for the electric current. There is a special form of electro magnet which has a movable core instead of it being fixed and this type of electro magnet is called a solenoid. You can see large electro magnets at work at a scrap metal yard, where they are employed on a crane jib to lift and transport scrap iron and steel.
He was famous for proving his theory that a changing magnetic field could generate a electric field and vice versa. this made it possible for later generations to create electric generators as well as motors
Sulfur is non-magnetic. It does not have magnetic properties like iron or nickel, which are considered magnetic materials.
No, selenium is not magnetic. It is a non-magnetic element with no magnetic properties.
No, calcium is not magnetic. It does not have magnetic properties in its natural state.
Magnetic: Fridge magnet Non magnetic: Milk
No, eletromagnetic waves propagate in two planes (eletro-magnetic) and can propagate in a vacuum. Water waves, on the other hand, are dependant on matter to transfer energy, making it a mechanical wave, not an eletromagnetic one.
Volts are the measure of Eletro motive force. (EMF)
A magnet that becomes energised when an electric current is passed through it.

The electro magnet is a British invention - by the scientist William Sturgeon in 1824. See related link for more details.

An alarm bell works by using electromagnets to create a magnetic field that causes a metal hammer to strike the bell, producing a loud ringing sound. When the alarm is triggered, an electrical current is sent through the system, causing the hammer to move back and forth and ring the bell.
Wires carry current to the fan from the electrical circuits of the building it is in. Inside the fan motor wires are wound in a particular fashion to make a coil. When any voltage is applied to such a wound coil, it generates an electro magnetic field. When any eletro magnet is placed near to this field, it experience a force, which is what makes the fan rotate.
