The peahen chooses the peacock with the most resplendent tail and this peacock passes on to his progeny, through mating with the peahen that chose him, all the genes that contributed to his tail display. Thus alleles are changed in the population through male progeny representing their progenitor's tail characteristics and female progeny representing their mother's choice in tail display.
