Active readers do the following:

  • underline or highlight key words and/or phrases - be selective, because too much highlighting means you'll just have to read the whole thing again
  • make notes in the margins to ask questions, summarize points, challenge what you've read, give examples, etc. (you can use sticky notes if you can't write on the textbook)
  • read critically by asking questions of the text - who wrote it? when was it written? who is the intended audience? does it link with something else you're studying? why was it written? is it a complete work or an excerpt?
  • look for "signposts" that indicate something is important - "most importantly," "therefore," "in contrast" or "on the other hand" can show you what the key points are
  • test yourself by reading for 20-30 minutes and then closing the book and jotting down key points from memory - go back and check your answers and reread anything you missed
  • explain what you've read to someone else
  • record yourself reading the material and listen to it while driving or exercising or doing chores
