I guess the police have had many nicknames over the years but the first was Peelers, named after the founder of the police service, Sir Robert Peel. Others have included The Sweeney which came from rhyming cockney slang, 'The Sweeney Todd, the Flying Squad' and this of course led to the television series of the same name in the 1970's starring John Thaw and Dennis Waterman. Other names have included, coppers, rozzers, the old bill and probably a lot of others it may not be appropriate to write here!
