where two people consider themselves together yet feel relaxed enough to see other people. this can often lead to misunderstanding as one person my feel they were on a break and date someone else while the other member or the couple isn't so happy. 'open' tends to suggest that the other person is a back up partner in case the flirting with other doesn't work
