Ecology is a type of science that relates to the environment. The suffix "-ology" simply means "the study of". Therefore the term "ecology" means the study of the environment. This may include organisms, animals, and plant types.

With the purpose of examining how a particular area lives and survives, such as a large swampland, ecologists make careful studies of the life forms and animals of this "swampland" which is used here as an example. Within the ecology or in particular the ecosystem of the swampland is a food chain. Environmentalists examine what the primary animals are and how they survive along with the next level of animals who feed off the primary sources for food. The scientists then also research what outside animals come to the swampland to drink, feed and sometimes reproduce. The animals at the top of the swampland's food chain, say as example, alligators. In a more practical sense, the scientists can examine, how the ecosystem will operate if one of the key components of it are destroyed. Once again as an example, should poachers begin killing alligators for their hides, what affect is that for the ecosystem of the swampland?

What can happen is that, aside from the loss of the alligators, the food these reptiles would normally eat now becomes more abundant. This can lead to having the ecosystem become out of balance, and the number of frogs, snakes and small mammal wildlife is not eaten and these creatures can become "pests" that overrun lands they normally would not travel to in any great numbers. Also, the creatures that are now in an "over abundant" state, begin to feed on lower creatures that would normally have greater numbers but do not because the feeders of these creatures would normally be a part of the now decimated alligator population. In this particular swampland example, the entire swampland is now out of balance and not in a "healthy state of affairs, so to speak. The solution is to preserve the swampland by not allowing hunters to kill alligators. With such a solution, the alligator population is no longer being "lost" and the food chain system can resume its normal activities. Thus not having an overflow of some creatures and a loss of others.
