An object that we see streaking across the sky is known as a meteor, or shooting star, but when this same object is in space, before hitting Earth's atmosphere, it is known as a meteoroid and if it survives its fiery entry through the atmosphere and lands on the earth it is now known as a meteorite. Three names for the same object! See the attached link for more information.

No, the scientific name for a meteor is "shooting star." When a meteor enters Earth's atmosphere and starts burning up, it's called a meteoroid. If it reaches the Earth's surface, it's then called a meteorite.

Meteor are sometimes called shooting stars, because that is what they look like. What they actually are is pieces of dust or dirt burning up in our atmosphere, so they have nothing to do with stars. Most showers occur at the same time each year and have names associated with them. Some of the best ones are the Quadrantids in early January, the Lyrids in late April, the Perseids in mid-August, the the Orionids in much of October, the Leonids in mid November and the Geminids in mid December.

All the showers get their names from the constellations visible in the part of the sky from where the meteors seem to come from, although there is no connection between the constellation and the meteor shower. So for example, the Perseids seem to come from the area where Perseus is and the Leonids seem to come from the area where Leo is.

Is meteor another name for shooting star?

Shooting stars are actually objects burning in the Earth's atmosphere. The name "shooting star" originates from ancient times (before advanced scientific investigation) when these burning meteors were though to actually be stars shooting across the night sky. Those that survive and crash onto the Earth's surface are then called meteorites.
