I am traveling to NYC next week. Weather forecast for clear skies highs of 45 low of 35...ideas on layering up?
that's really not very cold so, i don't think you'll need to "layer up"
and any personal items you may need
hope this helps!
The appropriate clothing choice in 53 degree F weather depends on several factors. The two most important things to consider, other than temperature, are wind and precipitation. The air right next to your skin, your laminar boundary layer, gets warmed by your skin. On a calm day, your laminar boundary layer (which may include the air between your clothing and skin, for example) is not disturbed, so you feel warm once your body initially heats up that air. When it is very windy, your laminar boundary layer is continuously being replaced by cold air, which your body continuously loses heat to. This causes you to feel much colder on windy days than on calm days. This effect is known as wind chill. Higher winds make the air seem colder than it is. Additionally, precipitation can affect how you should dress. On a rainy day, water can soak your clothing and make you feel cold as it evaporates. For this reason, staying dry is as important as staying warm. To a lesser extent, cloud cover can affect your warmth. Solar radiation can warm your skin slightly, while on cloudy days, this effect is not present. 53 degrees is not warm enough for a clear sky to be a reliable source of warmth, however.
In summary, a calm, clear 53 degree F day calls for pants, closed shoes, and a jacket, because it's somewhat chilly. If you're used to warmer climates, dress more warmly. Dressing in layers is important, so that you can shed one layer if you get too warm.
If it is windy or raining, wearing something wind- and/or water-proof is highly recommended in addition to the clothing mentioned above. Rubber boots are also highly convenient for keeping your feet warm. Even in temperatures above freezing, hypothermia can occur if you don't dress warmly (or dryly) enough.
I would wear a shirt where the sleeves are above or below your elbow, pants or jeans, closed toe shoes, and a light weight jacket
jeans and a light long sleeve shirt. tennies and a jacket!
Some thing like leggings and a shirt, take a jumper. If the sun is out, shorts/skirt and t-shirt/ croped top, sometimes a jumper.
you should wear short sleves, jeans, light jacket, anything light. for shoes wear toms, flats, sneakers.

Yes, jeans or corduroys would be suitable for this weather. A long sleeve shirt would also be nice but you don't necessarily need to wear a light coat unless you are susceptible to being cold often.
Thick clothes.

Yes.
Why not? It depends on how comfortable you feel in them and perhaps on what terrain you plan to wear them on (for example, I would not wear shorts in 80 degree weather walking through the jungle). If you're going to be exposed to the sun, don't forget the sunscreen.
32 F is freezing, wear winter clothes. 32 C is hot, wear summer clothes.
