He invented the velocipede (he called it the draisienne). It's basically a steerable wooden bicycle without pedals that the rider sits on and propels himself by pushing against the ground with his feet.

He also invented the first keyboard typewriter in 1821.
Karl Friedrich Von Drais invented the

laufmaschine, orvelocipede in English (running machine).

Technically it wasn't actually a machine. It was a seat on two wheels, like a bicycle with nopedals.

He also invented the earliest typewriter with a keyboard and a wood-saving cooker.

Horses were too expensive at the time due to "the year without a summer". The horses didn't have enough oats because of the bad weather. He was inspired to invent a form of personal mobility rather than horses.
The chronic crop failure of 1816 caused widespread death of horses which were the main form of transportation. This is what is said to have inspired Drais' research and invention of the hobbyhorse.

He invented an early type of bicycle called the draisienne, hoby-horse, or bone shaker. It looked fairly modern, but it didn't have any pedals, the rider had to kick himself forward with his feet against the ground.
