The theory as to how Calpol works to control pain and fever is that it inhibits prostaglandins in the brain and spinal cord and results in significant reduction of pain impulses in the body. Prostaglandin is a substance that responds to trauma and increases accordingly. Reduction in fever is however achieved by increased peripheral blood flow in the hypothalamus, which dissipates heat and lowers the body temperature. Though Calpol is used often in children, it is also used in treatment of adults for pain associated with arthritis, menstrual cramps and other conditions.
