What is causes the frequent migration of animals in Africa?

There are many animals that migrate in Africa, and quite a few can be described as great, for instance: there used to be a large springbok migration in southern Botswana and the north-western South Africa. But the most famous one is on the Serengeti plains (from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Masai Mara reserves in upper Kenya). These wildebeest and zebras forms the largest and longest overland migration in the world.

Animals move all year as they deplete the grazing lands.

This means the timing of the migration varies from month to month, year to year however, with Novembers rains the herds move south toward the Serengeti. The animals graze there for about four months where numerous offspring are born. In April and May the herds sweep northwest to the longer grasses of lake Victoria.

In June they move even further north to breeding grounds where they will feed until they cross the Mara river sometime in September/October when they again head south to the Serengeti.
