Increased levels of "greenhouse gases" such as CO2 and methane in the atmosphere cause heat on the surface of Earth to be trapped in the atmosphere instead of radiating back out into space. The rise in temperature melts ice caps whose high albedos normally reflect sunlight, causing the water to warm up and further increasing the Earth's surface temperature.

∙ 8y agoIf the amount of greenhouse gases (such as oxygen, carbon dioxide or monoxide) in the air increases, it will result in an increase in the temperature of the Earth. This is because these particles absorb the reflected radiation from the earth (which the earth received from the sun). The greenhouse gases radiate thermal energy (heat) in all directions and hence increasing the temperature of the earth. If there are less of these gases (which are released by cars, for example), the probability that the reflected radiation is absorbed by the particles is less as well and the radiation will return to space and not harm the earth.
