A chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) is an organic compound that contains only carbon, chlorine, and fluorine, produced as a volatile derivative of methane, ethane, and propane. The chemical compounds were once used in household products, but are now known to cause serious health issues.

Chloro Fluro Carbons (also called CFCs) are gases made up of three elements Chlorine, Fluorine and Carbon. They were once widely used as a coolant in refrigerators and as a propellant in aerosol cans. It was discovered in the late 1970s and early 1980s that CFCs from old and damaged refrigerators and old aerosol cans gradually found their way into the upper atmosphere where the they damaged the ozone layer. The ozone layer protects the Earth from harmful radiation. As a rsult of the damage a hole began to appear in the ozone layer over the South Pole each summer, getting bigger each year. Eventually CFC use was outlawed in aerosols and refrigerators. As a result the hole in the ozone layer has been reducing in size in recent years.

What are the uses of chloroflourocarbon?

CFC's have uses in household as well. It is used in deodorant, refrigerators, air conditioners, aerosol sprays etc.

How can the Ozone depletion be stopped and the damage repaired?

the hole in ozone is basically due to the chloroflourocarbon or CFC. therefore its use should be stopped.

What is it that cools the air in a household refrigerator?

Modern electric fridges are cooled by the evaporation of a low boiling point liquid. The resulting gas is then compressed and cooled (in the fins at the back of the fridge) to condense it back to a liquid. It then goes through the cycle again and again. See link to animated drawing for details. The liquid/gas used in fridges manufactured before the mid 1980s was genereally a CFC (Chloroflourocarbon) but these were banned under the Montreal treaty in 1989 due to their damaging effect on the ozone layer. Currently they have been largely replaced by HCFC in modern fridges but HCFCs although not harmful to the ozone layer are powerful global warming gasses. Their use is due to be banned by 2030 if not sooner.D - Absorption of the heat from the air due to evaporation of the liquid refrigerant.
