Cocaethylene is a third lethal drug created when cocaine and alcohol are used simultaneously.
Cocaethylene affects the brain for longer and is more toxic than either drug alone. It heightens and intensifies the euphoric effect of cocaine, but also amplifies the depressive effect of alcohol. The effects of taking cocaine and alcohol together are far more dangerous than taking either drug alone.
Cocaethylene is formed when alcohol and cocaine meet in the liver. This 'metabolite' remains in the body much longer, subjecting the heart and liver to a prolonged period of stress. That's why some of the recorded deaths from Cocaethylene occur up to 12 hours after the user has mixed substances. The risk of sudden death is 18 times greater when alcohol and cocaine are used together. And what's even worse is that you can't see it coming, you could be feeling completely fine one minute and the next minute, BANG.

Cocaethylene is the ethyl ester of benzoylecgonine. It is chemically related to cocaine. Cocaethylene is formed in the body when cocaine and alcohol have been taken simultaneously: the transesterification is catalysed by carboxylesterases in the liver. It does not occur naturally in coca leaves. Cocaethylene produces a more euphoric stimulation than cocaine in most users, and is longer lasting in the body. Some studies suggest that it may have a higher cardiovascular toxicity than cocaine.
