"Cysto" means related to the urinary tract; "-scopy" means to look in/at for diagnosis or treatment. A cystoscopy is a test procedure in which a flexible tube with a camera on the end is inserted up the urethra (tube that carries urine to the outside) into the bladder.
About one hour prior to the test, a nurse administers a light sedative or muscle relaxer. An IV is started, if one is not already running. Then the patient is wheeled into the X-Ray department. There, the patient is given fast acting sedation (count backwards from 100 and you're asleep before you get to 98). The tube/camera is inserted through the first sphincter; the urologist checks its patency (how well the sphincter opens and closes). The urethra walls are inspected, then it passes through the bladder sphincter. Exam is done of the bladder walls. If required, tools can be inserted through the tube to biopsy the bladder tissue. X-Rays can be taken as well.
The procedure lasts between 30-60 minutes. A catheter is in place when the patient awakens. It is removed within 24 hours.
*Note: The first urination can be quite painful because of bladder spasms.

maybeVoiding CystoUrethrography ?surely it is voiding cysto-urethrogramvideo control unit is a technical term (not that medical!)
I believe the name you are wanting is "cystourethrogram". "Cysto-" has to do with urinary, e.g. the bladder and kidneys. "-urethro" has to do with the uretha. And the "-gram" refers to the record made. There is also a "bead chain cystourethrogram" test in which a beaded chain is inserted up the urethra into the bladder and instead of fluid being placed into the bladder, a gas is used; a tracing on paper is made of the bladder pressure and expansion. When the bead chain is removed, the gas is expelled as if urine. Neither are very comfortable, especially if the bladder walls are infected (interstitial bladder infection).
