Coal is a form of carbon resulting from great pressure and heat applied over a long time to the remains of plants that lived during the carboniferous period.

Stone is a hard mineral or combination of minerals that was formed wither by the cooling of volcanic erruptions or by the accumulation and compression of objects over a geologic time scale.

Since coal is made of carbon, it will burn and is a good fuel source. Stone is made of non-carbon minerals and will not burn.
