An auto transformer has one winding with the output being tapped at some point and therefore has no isolation between primary and secondary. This may make it unsafe or illegal in some applications. A common power transformer has separate windings.

An ordinary, single-phase, transformer, strictly speaking, is termed a mutual transformer and consists of two, electrically isolated, windings called the 'primary' (supply side) and 'secondary' (load side) which share a common magnetic field.

An auto transformer, on the other hand, can also be a single-phase transformer, but one that uses one winding, part of which is common to both the supply and load. Therefore, the primary and secondary sides of an autotransformer are notelectrically isolated from each other.

Autotransformers tend to be lighter and cheaper than mutual Transformers, but cannot be used wherever its important that the primary and secondary circuits must be electrically isolated from each other.

A mutual transformer can, if necessary, be connected to create an auto transformer, but its rated volt amperes must be reduced.

The main difference between auto and power transformer is ,that auto transformer has only single winding, but the power transformer has two spearte winding for HV,and LV," the second difference is vary important ,that is auto transformer work as a self induction rule, but the power transformer work on as a mutual induction rule.

Variable transformer may also refer as auto transformer. We can vary the output voltage of the transformer. But in the ordinary transformers output voltage is already designed.

Where can one purchase an Auto Transformer?

One can purchase an Auto Transformer from websites like Mastech Power Supply, Amazon, Ali Express, RS-Online, eBay, Foster Transformer, Farnell and Alibaba.

Why can auto transformer be dangerous?

(An auto-transformer can be dangerous because the primary is not electrically isolated from the secondary. If the auto-transformer is connected to mains power, this is the equivalent of sticking your fingers directly in the wall plug; not a good idea!) aka deceptacons like megatron will kill you.

Can you use ordinary transformer in place of auto transformer?

yes we can place auto transformer in place of original transformer

Why auto transformer is lighter than conventional type?

because the copper is saved in the auto transformer that is the ratio of weights of copper in auto transformer to normal transformer is (1-(1/a)) where a is transformer ratio

What is the difference between transformers and autotransformers?

A transformer or, more-properly, a mutual transformer, has two windings, the primary and the secondary, which are electrically-isolated from each other, with the secondary voltage induced through mutual induction. An autotransformerconsists of one tapped winding, so the secondary circuit is not electrically isolated from the primary circuit. An autotransformer may be used to either increase or decrease the primary voltage, depending how it is connected.

Power loom is a type of loom which is operated by power and the other side auto loom has so many automatic function, sensor and thus output of auto looms are more finer than Power loom.We can get less weaving defect in auto loom fabric.
