When a product is certified as being 'fair trade' it means that those who grew the cocoa beans received a fair price and that those who harvested the beans were paid a fair wage. There is no difference in type and quality of these beans from other beans, and thus there is no difference in the chocolate. However, fair trade chocolate is more expensive because of the higher (fairer) price paid to the growers and workers.

Fair Trade is a standard of products where there is a set standard of ethical treatment of workers and farmers in the trading process. It refers to farmers and workers from third world countries, who can be easily taken advantage of. When a company uses Fair Trade products, it's a sign that they are held to keeping up with that standard.

So Fair Trade chocolate is chocolate manufactured from cocoa beans and other products farmed and traded by people treated according to the standard.

Chocolate is made from cacao beans which are grown in hot climates. Many of the countries chocolate is grown in could be considered third world countries and most people do not want the farmers in these countries to be exploited for their beans. This has to do with fair trade because fair trade is all about sustainable sources, fair deals for farmers and giving back and enhancing the communities that the beans are grown in. This is why chocolate, like coffee or other goods, have a lot to do with fair trade.

Is dove fairtrade chocolate?

Dove's dark chocolate line carries the seal of the Rainforest Alliance, one of several different organizations that certify fair trade chocolate. You can verify that product line's membership through the Rainforest Alliance's website (see the related weblink below) and by seeing their seal on the respective products at Dove's website (also listed below). Unfortunately Dove's regular milk chocolate line does not appear to be fair trade at this time but hopefully that will change in the future.
