I think you mean NON-FORMAL. Formal education is what you think of when you think of school. Non-formal would be education learned on the job, or out in "real life." Sometimes people can learn as much in a non-formal setting, but usually a formal education produces a more educated, well-rounded person.

Formal and Non Formal Education has basic differences. Formal education is classroom-based, accompanied by trained teachers. Informal education happens outside the classroom, in after-school programs, community-based organizations, museums, libraries, or at home. Both formal and informal education settings offer different strengths to educational outreach project. After-school programs offer a different kind of environment, where ones activities don't need to be as formal and once can easily reach the audience. While both schools and after-school programs serve students, at school blossom in after-school settings. Real learning can happen in a setting where kids feel less intimidated or more comfortable than they do in a formal classroom.THESSA MATULAC

The disadvantage of non formal learning is accreditation. Non formal learning is not based on a curriculum instead is based on experience.
Formal education provides structured learning within a curriculum leading to recognized qualifications like degrees or diplomas, while non-formal education offers flexibility and tailored learning experiences outside traditional classroom settings. Formal education often leads to better job opportunities and career advancement, while non-formal education can help develop practical skills and knowledge for personal enrichment or specific interests. Both types of education play a crucial role in personal development and lifelong learning.

The University Confidential TrailBlazing team was just asked to come up with a few thoughts on informal or non-formal education. Informal Learning is a new trend which is taking hold in a lot of industries. Universities and Colleges have ceased to be specific or teach specific skills - a very key one being critical thinking. Informal learning tends to be on the job in nature, it would be something like a company mentorship program, or on the job training. Both of which are informal and in most cases there is no test - once the employee demonstrates proficiency they can move off and do the job. Internships and CoOp work terms also tend to fall into the category of informal learning. The big reason why informal learning is such a trend right now is because it allows the teaching of specific skills without overdoing it. Unless a student actively pursues it at College or University the likelihood they will acquire the skills the employers these days require, is quite low.
