"Drum and Bass" is a style of music comprised of heavy bass/sub bass and fast breakbeats.
I have seen a bass drum mounted on a base. The word "bass" actually comes from "bas" a Middle English term influenced by the Italian (the origin of many music terms) "basso" both terms mean "low (pitch)".
I'm disgusted that anyone would even try to degrade a perfectly good base drum!
well I'm pretty sure when you hit the skin (top part) of the drum, it vibrates through the cavity in the base of the drum making a sound
It depends on what you want. A snare drum produces higher and lower sounds, if that's all you want, and a drum set comes with a snare drum, and a base drum (lower sounds only), and another drum that has higher sounds only (sorry, i don't know the name). Also a drum set comes with cymbals.

The base drum. By a lot. And "base" is actually spelled "bass."
