Terra is Latin for "earth".
The name Earth originated from the 8th century Anglo-Saxon word erda which means ground or soil. In old English the word became Eorthe then Erthe in Middle English. Earth was first used as the name of the planet around 1400.

I got this info from www.wiki-answers.com
The word "Earth" is Old English and German in origin, related to the Old Saxon 'ertha', the Dutch 'aerde', and the German 'erda'.
I'm not really an expert on words and word origins, but it seems likely that people used Earth to mean 'land' and then it was the natural thing to refer to all the land and the planet.
Even the Oxford English Dictionary (online) admits:
"Men's notions of the shape and position of the earth have so greatly changed since Old Teutonic times, while the language of the older notions has long outlived them, that it is very difficult to arrange the senses and applications of the word in any historical order."
Various names have been proposed, including Terra and Tellus, which are other words that mean "dirt". The planet Earth never really needed a formal name, because back when people were inventing such names, Earth was the only world we knew about. And you don't need a proper name for something if it's the only one like it.
earth is sometimes called as the green planet........
Because all life and elements on earth interact and support each other to create a compromised whole, which is the definition of system.
