There is a case for suggesting that too much vigorous washing of the vaginal area and over use of deodorants can prevent the natural anti-bacterial vaginal secretions from doing the job that nature intended. If this happens, an infection can set in and result in painful soreness and unpleasant vaginal discharges.

Sensible advice would be to leave the area alone or gently wipe the outside with a cloth and warm water in the normal course of washing or bathing.

In the rush for profits, the pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies scare women into believing that they smell if they do not use their expensive products.
