"Graft" in the political sense of the word means to use one's political position to gain personal wealth by misappropriating public funds for personal use. An example would be a city mayor building a private pool at his home with some of the city budget money allocated to build a public library.

Graft can also mean any illegal work. Strong-arm tactics, running a numbers ring, and murder-for-hire are examples of graft in this meaning of the word.

A graft is also the combining of two plants to make one. You graft a branch of one on to the stem of another.

Medically, a graft is basically putting in a replacement part. A skin graft involves replacing damaged skin with skin that has been removed from somewhere (or someone) else.
