Great question. The gravestones of the 18th and 19th centuries are world's away from the modern ones we see today. Some of the old tombstones told stories and/or poems about the deceased and how he/she met his/her demise. Gone from most cemeteries are the huge elaborate monuments, the winged angels that stood 15' in height, replaced by much smaller, marble slabs that are ground level. Modern format is the deceased's name, date of birth and death and their earthly relationship with others such as:Beloved mother, sister, daughter, ect. It is also common to see photos of the dead engraved onto the marble.
