Hypnotism to be effective must be practiced by a physician, either a psychologist or a psychiatrist. Purpose of the hypnotism would be to place the patient in such a condition that it would be possible to regress him to some time in his past to determine questions that patient didnt remember when fully conscious. Also, under hypnotism, sometimes the patient might be able to perform tasks or remember facts that he otherwise could not.

Is Alison still alive?

Yes, Alison is still alive (techniqually). So, basically. Alison Dilaurentis had a twin sister named Courtney. And Courtney was crazy and went to a mental hospital and then, she came home because she was switching and her mom mistaked alison for Courtney and took her to the hospital. and since Courtney was always pretending to be alison kuz she was crazy, she just htought she was pretending again so she didnt believe her. and then Courtney befriended aria, Emily, Spencer, and Hannah. so then , on the night of their annual 7th grade sleepover, it was alison she saw in the window (the real one) not Toby! and then so when Courtney was hipnotizing them, Spencer got mad and kicked her out and so when she left she ran into the real alison who got really mad (because ,the same way that mona, found out their secrets that's how she did) and pushed her into the hole where they were building their new gasibo. aria, Spencer, Hannah, and Emily never knew that alison had a twin because she was always at the hospital (although the real alison was at the hospital the whole time!)
