Hogwarts Extreme is an online roleplaying community, so there is no specific "way" to play it. Traditional online roleplaying means that a user would go into selected forums, in this instance "Dueling," "The Quidditch Pitch," "RP Central," etc. and join or create a new thread where you can write up scenarios that your character can act in with other characters. Hogwarts Extreme is different in that there are other ways you can use the site without having to roleplay. A user can collect galleons and buy rare items or participate in auctions, take part in various clubs and contests, read fanfiction, make graphics, and take Hogwarts classes among other things.
Pets cannot be trained to increase their stats. Those are predetermined when you purchase or adopt a pet.
Yes, it is free to take part in everything on the site. It does however have a donate button with which you can donate to the site if you so wish, but it isn't mandatory.
