The reaction of Hydrochloric acid (HCl) with Magnesium most often occurs when Magnesium Hydroxide, or Mg(OH)2 in a water suspension (Milk of Magnesia) is ingested to neutralize stomach acid, which contains some Hydrochloric Acid (HCl). When it happens in this context, it is called an Acid-Base Neutralization reaction, where HCl is the acid, and Mg(OH)2 is the base. In any acid-base reaction, the products will be a salt and water (H2O). In this case, Magnesium Chloride (MgCl2) and H2O are produced, and thus both acid and base are neutralized.

Is magnesium and hydrochloric acid an acid-base reaction?

No, it is a single displacement reaction. It can also be called a redox reaction. It is not an acid base reaction because although hydrochloric acid is obviously and acid, magnesium is a metal, not a base.

Why does the reaction stop between magnesium and hydrochloric acid?

It could stop because there wasn't enough magnesium or hydrochloric acid for the reaction to go to completion.

What is the reaction of magnesium with hydrochloric acid?

magnesium chloride + hydrogen

What is the product of a magnesium and hydrochloric acid reaction?

Magnesium Chloride.

Why is magnesium plus hydrochloric acid an exothermic reaction?

Exothermic reaction

What happens if magnesium is added to hydrochloric acid is a singlereplacement reaction?

Yes, when magnesium reacts with hydrochloric acid it is a single replacement reaction. The same is true for nearly all cases of a reaction between an acid and a metal.

What is the limiting factor in the reaction of hydrochloric acid and magnesium?

the limiting factor varies between the magnesium and hydrochloric acid as there needs to be enough hydrogen for every magnesium..

What is a similar reaction to magnesium and hydrochloric acid?

it would make magnesium chloride

Is the reaction of magnesium and hydrochloric acid acid-base reaction?

A Lewis base (magnesium) donates a pair of electrons. Magnesium goes from no charge to a 2+ charge in the reaction with hydrochloric acid.Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) --> MgCl2(aq) + H2(gas)

What reaction is created when magnesium mixes with an acid?

Magnesium reacts with acid to produce hydrogen gas. For example reaction of Magnesium with Hydrochloric acid is..... Mg +2HCl ----> MgCl2 + H2 gas

Where did the chlorine in the magnesium chloride come from in the reaction?

Chlorine is from hydrochloric acid.
